Mediation Skills Training Program
Northwestern University's 40-hour Mediation Skills Training course focuses on fundamental and practical techniques to successfully resolve disputes. The certificate can be used by legal professionals as well as career changers to enter the field of dispute resolution, arbitration and mediation. Students in the mediation training program will also learn about professional resources, and attorneys can earn mandatory continuing legal education credits.

Mediation Skills Training Program Goals
Program Goals
Over the course of the 40-hour intensive Mediation Training program, students will:
- Acquire the skills used to assist parties with divergent interests to reach a resolution
- Engage in simulated mediations to develop an understanding of the mediation process
- Work with coaches who have professional conflict mediation experience
- Set performance-based standards for evaluating their own work
- Learn about ethics in the field, opportunities in commercial mediation and arbitration, and how to start building a practice as a mediator

Mediation Skills Certificate Requirements
To be awarded a certificate of completion for the Mediation Training program, students must complete all 40-hours of this intensive course. Please note that attendance is required for the duration of the entire session to earn continuing legal education credit.

- You may also earn continuing education credits for other jurisdictions. We will be able to assist in completing required documents, but students will need to pay the fees which may range from free to more than $100. Students may wish to review the American Bar Association CLE website and find the rules covering their jurisdiction in advance.
IMHCA Credit (Mental Health Counselors)
- This mediation training program is co-sponsored by the Illinois Mental Health Counselors Association. The IMHCA is licensed by the Illinois Department of Professional Regulation to provide 35 CEs for LSWs, LCSWs, LPCs, LCPCs and LMFTs.

Association of Attorney-Mediators (AAM)
Court Approval
- Northwestern's mediator training program has been approved by the Presiding Judge of the Law Division of Cook County as satisfying one of the requirements to become a Certified Mediator in Cook County. Read about the other requirements on the Cook County Website Rule 20.08.
- Northwestern's mediator training program has been approved by the Presiding Judge of the Domestic Relations Division of Cook County as satisfying one of the requirements to become a Certified Mediator in Cook County. Please see Rule 13.4(x)(b) for minimum qualifications for in inclusion on Court-Certified Mediator roster for Cook County Domestic Relations Division.
- Northwestern's mediator training program is approved by the New York State Unified Court System's Office of ADR Programs under Part 146. Registrants who intend to apply to a New York State trial court roster may need additional training in New York court-specific rules and procedures and relevant New York law. Final placement on any court roster is at the discretion of the local Administrative Judge and participation in this course does not guarantee placement on a local court roster.
- Northwestern's on-campus program is approved by the Arkansas Alternative Dispute Resolution Commission to satisfy the certification requirement for a 40-hour basic mediation training as set out in the Requirements for Certification of Mediators for Circuit Courts. Because this course is not designed for Arkansas participants and is offered outside of the state of Arkansas, anyone seeking certification in Arkansas will be required to take the Arkansas ADR Commission's course on Mediator Ethics, Law and General Practices.
